Retrieve password for dial-up connection? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an old computer with Windows XP on which there is a dial-up vonnection that I very occasionally use as a spare when my broadband is down. I want to retire that machine, and I have moved the modem card to a new box. But I have a problem: I have no idea what the password is. I searched the registry high and low, but I was not able to find the information about the network connection at all.

I realise that the password is not likely to be stored in clear text anywhere, but it must be retrievable, since else Windows cannot pass it to the ISP.

And speaking about the ISP, the obvious suggestion would be to talk with the ISP and get a new password. The problem is, they don't know that they have this modem line at all. And which may be true, since they acquired my account (and a bunch more) from my original ISP six years ago. My credentials for the modem line never changed, but they still work.
