FCS installation /Remote SQL DB RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a single DB server ( SQL 2005) in my infrastucture and i does not wants to install the FCS on the same server.
I am planning to manage less than 150 machines using FCS , which topology i should follow , in place of wsus i have SCEworking.
    please suggest me.

  • Hi!

There are a few scenarios i can think of.
Even if you don't want to install FCS on your SQL server. Do you want to use the SQL to host the FCS databases?
if you want to use the SQL for FCS databases it has to be a SQL 2005 standard or enterprise edition (32 bit version)
If your SQL server does not meet these requirements, you have to setup a separate SQL server

    Scenario 1 (using existing SQL)
Setup FCS roles on a separate server (except the database roles which goes on your existing SQL server) according to a  3 server installation (explained in the setup doc)

Scenarion 2 (using a new SQL)
Install all roles on a single box (except distribution role) according to a 2 server installation.

    Setup docs are found here:

    good luck

  •  Thanks for your valuable suggestions , I still have some questions in my mind
    1. Can i install FCS without hosting its Db to SQL ?
    2. As per documentation for three server topology

To install a three-server topology, install the management server and the collection server and database on server A, the reporting database on server B, and then the distribution server on server C.

Now as my DB resides on another server . how can i install collection and DB server  with FCS management server ?
    3. While installing only management server role , it gives error " collection server components not found"
What i am understanding in my scenario is to install Mangement server ( FCS console ) on Server A , BD , collection and reporting on server B , and WSUS or SCE on server C.

Does i am going right diection

  • Hi!

    1. No, the FCS central management roles needs a SQL server (enterprise or standard edition)
    2. Yes, you can install all the db roles on your SQL server Collection, collection db, reporting, reporting db (the 3:server setup decribes it a bit differently, sorry)
just like you specify in your conlusion.

    3. If you are getting this error yuo are probably installing it in the wrong order. the management server role should be installed last, since it relies on the other roles beeing present.

I have checked for the error with the exit code but i am still not able to resolve it. FYI there was no other process running for msiexec.exe. How to resolve this error?
