Restore VHD instance to harddrive

    Question

  • I want to use the boot to vhd feature to do a complete new setup of machine. After some testing I would like to move the content of the vhd to my real hard drive. This allows me to setup the machine step by step in parallel to working with the orginal one.

Everything is fine except that I cannot move the VHD content to a real drive. I tried to make a image backup from the running vhd instance but I am not able to restore it to the drive directly. The restore process does not accept the backup form the vhd.

Is there a way to migrate the vhd to a real disk image?

  • Actually, Mark Russinovich and the boys were kind enough to develop a VHD2Disk tool.  You can find it here:

    forum.sysinternals.com/uploads/865/Vhd2disk_64bits.rar

I stumbled across this on this blog post: http://forum.sysinternals.com/vhd2disk_topic27311.html

Happy restoring, if it is not finished already.

  • There may be a third party tool to do this, such as Acronis True Image with Universal Restore, perhaps. I haven't tested this scenario. The idea here is to image copy and replace drivers and possibly the HAL.

I don't think so. The orginal question as I interpreted it is to take the contents of the vhd and extract them onto a physical disk to boot from the physical disk directly instead of from the vhd. The idea is to extract the Windows OS from the vhd instead of having to install Windows from scratch.

  • Restore VHD instance to harddrivenot accept the backup form the vhd.

    Answer:
I do know of the method of using DISK2VHD to capture the image, and I have seen other programs that do the same.  Also, to Apply a VHD to partition(un-allocated)/Disk, one could use EASEUS Partition Manager.

    This is the VHD-to-Physical-Disk tutorial.
