Tape backups, how long, how much data and how fast RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am backing up 6 Protection Groups that make around 100 tape jobs. I want to find out how long the backup jobs are taking, how much data they're backing up and the throughput.

I was testing this a few weeks ago and then had to put the test on hold. I am sure it was taking around 16 hours using 2 drive to back everything up, but now it is taking 24 hours. I need to see what changed. I am sure we have added data, but not enough to make it 8 hours slower.

    Best wishes

  • Look at the data transferred of tape jobs in monitoring.  Divide that by the time taken and you have your throughput for that item.  I am backing up about 5 TB of data over a 16 hour period to two LTO4 tapes.  The source storage volume raid topology is extremely important in the performance of getting the data to the tape drive.  I am using Raid 10 SATA drives (4) to see about a 160 MB/s to my tape drive.  Tape only jobs (network source) and single disk sources are at about 80 MB/s.
