Site collection export RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I'm a newbie and I have a question about exporting a site collection from one server to another, using stsadm -o export.

My site has site collection features for webparts that were developed with VisualStudio, and I was wondering what can I do so the features still work in the new site (after the import)?

is there a way to extract the features and re-install them so they can work?

    Thanks.

  • If you are exporting site contents and importing into another site which are residing in same site collection, then you don't have to worry about features or webparts, they will be available on your destination site.

However, if you are lanning to import content on a site where the same feature or webparts are not available, then you need to first deploy them on that webapp or site and then run stsadm import.

  • Hi,

STSADM export will not be enough to copy features and webparts etc.

I suggest you to deploy the same in your new farm as well then try using STSADM export.

I Hope this will help you out.

  • Hi,

Were the WebParts deployed using a WSP? If they were you can use The SharePoint Solution Downloader allows SharePoint administrators to download deployed solutions from a SharePoint farm. Using the SharePoint Solution Downloader, you'll no longer need to worry about losing a SharePoint Solution Package (WSP). http://spsolutiondownloader.codeplex.com/

  • Just to close the loop on Ivan's response, exporting the site collection is not sufficient.  It won't deploy the web parts to a new farm.

If you're exporting a site collection from one farm to the other, you're probably in good shape as all the needed bits are already in the farm.
