Monitoring IBM Storage DS4300 With SCOM 2007 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have SCOM 2007 R2 server

And DS4300 with monitored servers under it (the DS4300 connect with fiber optic cables to 2 SNMP monitored fiber optic switches connected to monitored IBM windows servers)

The DS4300 connected also to the network.

How do I monitor the DS4300 so I will know if a disk defunct from the RAID array for example?

  • Your next best bet from this point is to contact IBM for support on their MP.

They being monitor for  memory, fans, PSU…
     there is no storage monitor

  • I thought I would give this thread an update since I have found a solution for this issue. As of December 14, 2010, IBM has created a management pack for the DS storage. The article and mp can be downloaded from here http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=ssg1S4000933

The documentation can be a little misleading but here is the configuration I went with and it has worked flawlessly. Here is the part I found a little confusing, there is no support for in-band IBM storage subsystem monitoring. This IBM Storage Subsystem Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 supports only out-of-band IBM storage subsystem monitoring.

Essentially, this means you should install the software on your Root Management Server or other managed server not on the same subnet as the DS devices.

We were only receiving alerts from the DS devices as setup in Storage Manager and the alerts were vague at best. We were looking for the single pane of glass we could see the health of our entire infrastructure. We are now monitoring our IBM DS34XX with SCOM and from the RMS. I hope this helps someone and if you have any problems ping me.  This was the answer for us! Good luck!
