  • All greetings! There is a question concerning work DPM 2010, I need to make archives of systems that it was possible to restore at failure on the same or on other iron. But I rush about and I can not understand, whether it is necessary to choose at server archiving Bare Metal Rovery + System State or still it is necessary to choose Disc C:?

  • DPM uses Windows backup to create a BMR backup.  To see which volumes are included in the BMR backup, run this command from an administrative command prompt:


           wbadmin.exe start backup -allcritical -quiet -backuptarget:%1


    The %1 will cause it to fail if you proceed by answering Y, but will show what volumes are included in the backup.

    The above shows a System Reserved and a C: volume, but the system reserved is not included in the BMR, only C: volume in my case.  If other systemstate components were located on other volumes (like Sysvol on D:) then that would be included in BMR and listed in the backup command output.

    So basically, in a single drive configuration BMR is all you need to protect.

    How to restore BMR image backup from DPM.


    1. In the DPM administrator console, navigate to the Recovery tab and navigate through the Protected data to the computer you need to restore and find the Bare Metal Recovery option

    2. Use the calendar to find a time/date you want to recover to.  Once selected, in the bottom pane, right-click Bare Metal Recovery and select Recover.

    3. When the Review Recovery Selection window comes up, review to make sure the information is correct.  It should list the Recovery item as Bare Metal Recovery and Recovery source should list the computer you are recovering.  Once this is verified, click Next.

    4. You will see the Select Recovery Type window come up now.  We are going to be recovering to a network share so that we can access it on the system we are going to restore to.  You can chose to restore to tape if available as well if you are going to take the tape to a remote location to do the restore.  So, in this case we will select Copy to a network folder and then click Next.

    5. You will now need to select the location to restore these files to.  This location will have to be on a computer that has the DPM agent installed and will be accessible to the computer you are going to restore to.  To choose this, click Browse and navigate to a drive or share that has enough free space.  Once you have selected this, click Next.

    6. The options are the same again as what we saw with all of the other recoveries.  Once you have selected the options you wish to set, click Next.

    7. Review the summary of the recovery to be sure everything is as you expect.  When you agree to this, begin the recovery process by selecting Recover

    8. Navigate to the location the files were restored to and navigate down the restored folders until you find a folder labeled %drvletter%-volume.  In this case, it was labeled E-Volume, but most frequently you will see it as C-Volume.  When you find this folder, share it as this is what the restore process will attach to.

    How to restore the files from WindowsImageBackup folder to computer.


    1. Start the computer you are going to restore the image to using the Windows DVD to match the system you are restoring.  If you are doing BMR for a Windows Server 2008 system, then boot to the Windows Server 2008 DVD.  If you are doing BMR for a Windows Server 2008 R2 system, then boot to the Windows Server 2008 R2 DVD.

    2. On the initial screen, verify language/locale settings and click Next.

    3. When the Install screen comes up, select Repair your computer in the lower left of the screen.

    4. You now have the System Recovery Options screen.  This may list an existing OS if it finds one on the drive.  We are going to be looking to do a restore, so we are not worried if there is one listed. For Windows Server 2008, just click Next. For Windows Server 2008 R2, be sure that you select the radio button to Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier before selecting Next.

    5. This step is ONLY ON Windows Server 2008:  When prompted to choose a recovery tool, select Windows Complete PC Restore.

    6. You will now likely be prompted that Windows cannot find a system image, select Cancel.

    7. It will now prompt you that you need to point it to an image.
    For Windows Server 2008, select Restore different backup and then Next.
    For Windows Server 2008 R2, select Select a system image and then Next.

    8. This will bring up a screen allowing you to find the image you are going to restore from.  Since we have put this on a network share, we need to start networking.  To do this, click on Advanced…

    9. This brings up a screen that will allow us to search the network.
    On Windows Server 2008, choose Search for a backup on the network.
    On Windows Server 2008 R2, choose Search for a system image on the network.
     Important: If the network is using IPSec or does not have a DHCP server, then additional measures must be taken in order to access the backed up image.  You can copy the backup image to a thumb drive and access the backup locally.

    10. When prompted if you are sure, click Yes.

    11. Now enter the path to the share created in step 8 from Step 1 – Recover contents of WindowsImageBackup folder:.  You can also connect using the IP address and share name.  Click OK.

    12. This will prompt you for credentials needed to access the share.  Enter the credentials required for the share and click OK.

    13. Now it will show a list of recovery images available from the share you indicated.  There should only be one as you shared out only the recovery point specific for this computer.  Select that recovery point from the list and click Next.

    14. This will now scan the backup you selected for specific backups available in that recovery point.  This again should yield just one date/time stamped recovery and list the hard drive associated with it.  Select this recovery point and click Next.

    15. Check the box to have it Format and repartition disks in order to have it wipe out the local disks before laying down the restore, then click Next.

    16. Finally, verify the settings and click Finish to have it begin the restore process.
