VHD support (and hyper-v)

Question
-
Hello,
I was under the impression that the format of the VHD has not changed between virtual PC / Server / Hyper-V.
I have copied a VHD from our Hyper-V farm and I cannot get Virtual PC BETA to use it.
I can mount it from windows 7 with DISKPART but I cannot mount it from VPC (BETA)
We have rolled out hyper-v for our developers, due to the nature of the type of work we do we would really like to move VMs from Hyper-V to Virtual PC. This is not supported (it can be done though); I was hoping it would be support with the new virtual PC and you wouldn’t have to hack the HAL to make it work.
Thanks

Hi Steve
This is a limitation for VPC today. The VHD created in Hyper-v cannot be used to create a virtual machine in Windows Virtual PC (or VPC 2007) due to incompatible HAL. (For more details see http://blogs.technet.com/jhoward/archive/2008/02/28/are-vhds-compatible-between-hyper-v-and-virtual-server-and-virtual-pc.aspx)
Thanks

As far as I know officially won't be supported to move Hyper-V images to Windows VPC. However, did you get any error message?Wednesday, May 6, 2009 10:50 AM

When I created the VPC I just got a general error, with no clue as to the problem.
When I edit an existing VPC and add my VHD as a second drive, it told me the disk was too big :(
So.... I am resizing the disk now. I am not pleased with the disk size limitation. The size I chose was the default that hyper-v offered. So.... Again technical block that makes moving vms from hyper-v to vpc hard.
I presume when I mount it and boot. It will blue screen, so I will have to overwrite the HAL. I have done this in the past with DISKPART.
Hyper-V is working so well for us, but not being able to move VMS from our HYPER-V farm to a laptop is making us think we should have gone with VMWARE.
We are a gold partner and we test and do some integration type dev work with our product on hyper-v. We recommend hyper-v to customers as this is what we test with. If we cannot move VMS around we may have to go with VMWARE and then the line to our customers will be its tested with vmware. Thanks

Hello Nitin,
:(
in our company we hoped that this will be possible. We currently develop all our applications on hyper-v images (.NET Things, Dynamics AX etc.). For presentation purposes or developing things we need to copy the hyper-v "developing" images to local pc's. Currently it's only possible and easy-going with other virtualization software. I think it's a must that windows virtual pc and hyper-v are compatible or easy convertible.

Andi

I fully described the process and pitfalls of Virtual PC to Hyper-V and back migration in a Microsoft webcast and in my blog:
