Does the VM 2012 can show up in the WSUS server while not report to the WSUS server? If yes, please check the following things:
1. By default, WSUS 2008R2 use http port 80 https 443, WSUS 2012 use http port 8530 http 8531, please check if you append the port to the WSUS URL after using WSUS 2012, for example,
http://wsusname:8530;
2. Please ensure the automatic update is enabled on the affected client, please check registry keys in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU, enable "NoAutoUpdate" is "0", UseWUServer is "1", "AUOptions"
be one of "2","3","4","5";
3. If the above settings are correct, while the affected client still not report to the WSUS server, please reset windows update components on the affected machine:
