PDF File in SharePoint Document Library Will Not Open from Link in Word Doc RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello!

I created a Word 2010 document and added absolute links to .PDF files stored in a Document Library on SharePoint 2007.  When I try to open the .PDF files from the Word document, I receive the following message:

"Unable to open 'URL'.  Cannot open the specified file."

The Word document is on my local drive.  Any suggestions, solutions?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Patti,

When you right click to edit the link, then take the contents of the link, does it resolve properly?

Are the PDF files also local to your hard drive?

    Sincerely,

  • The links resolve properly.  The .PDF files are located in a document library on the SharePoint 2007 server.

(I have links to Word documents, in the same Word file, in the same document library on the SharePoint server and they open without a problem.)

  • Hi Patti,

Hmm, I wonder if Word does not have permission to access the folder for some reason.  In your case it is Word that is spawning the request when it fails and IE or Edge when it passes correct?

For the heck of it, see if you can open Word as ADMIN and see if that makes a difference.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi IoTGirl,

Opening Word as an ADMIN doesn't change anything. I'm still receiving the same error, "Unable to open 'URL'.  Cannot open the specified file."

    Thanks!

  • Does the URL link start woith "File:" or "Http:"?  If it is one, try using the other.
