Network Device Dependencies in SCOM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any way create network device dependencies within SCOM? I have considered creating two subscriptions with delays on them, but this doesn't seem to be the most effective method because multiple alerts will come in for a site when it goes down. For example, a site goes down that means an alert for the following comes in:

    1) Router

    2) Switches

    3) Servers

Is there anyway to build in smarts into SCOM and prioritize that if the router goes down go ahead an suppress the alerts coming from the devices that are underneath it? Would I have to build this using a Distributed Application method?

  • Hi

I think it will be a challenge to do this within SCOM and I'm not sure how a Distributed Application would help.

The sort of logic you are looking for might well be met with Orchestrator but even there I'm not sure it will help with alerts. It could be used though to put some logic into notifications.

  • Ok, So I have about 900 network devices with around 200 locations. Would you suggest a run book for every location to detect the router being down and place the rest of the devices behind the router under maintainece mode? But then the heartbeat thresholds would have to be sooner for the routers than the rest of the devices so the run book could run accurately?

  • I think this is the answer to my problem:

I am going to test it out to see if it works.
