Refiners are reset after each keyword search in Search Center RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

It seems that the default OOTB behavior of the FAST Search Center is: When I user executes a keyword after they have set a refiner to a desired value the refiner resets back to none set.

Could anyone confirm that this is OOTB behavior?

Also, has anyone had any experience in changing this behavior?

    Thanks,

  • Hello Bob,

Yes this is correct, and with good reason. Say you execute a query and you get a set of refiners on the left hand side. You click one to refine further. If you change your search term and keep the refinement, then you could end up with an empty result set. Which I think will confuse the user.

If you want to pre-set or keep refiners, use check boxes or drop-downs (like the scope dropdown). That yields better UX in my opinion. Refinement should be done on the set you are working with, and when loading up a new result set (by clicking the search button) you start over again.

Building the perfect search UI is no easy task, and depends heavily on the data you search into and your target audience.
