Export VM fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently created a new virtual machine in a 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.  The virtual machine has Windows server 2016 running with a total of 5 virtual hard drives assigned to it. The issue we are experiencing is when I try to export the VM on one of the Host servers in the cluster the export will fail and the VM will reboot and replicate to the other host server in the cluster(This also happens when the VM is on the other Host). Out of the 10 virtual machines in the cluster this is the only server that I'm unable to export.

i did receive the following error in event viewer:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f3, The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
    the error may not reoccur.

    event ID: 1069

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine ----' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role '----' failed.
Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

    Event ID: 1205

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role '----' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.

I am able to successfully create a checkpoint of the VM in Hyper-v manager.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Did you try to simply copy the VM files with Windows Explorer?

  • Yes copying the VM with file explorer does work however export doesn't.

  • Hey Leopete,

You mentioned that other VM's in the cluster are able to export without any issues. Are the other VM's that are successful based on Server 2016? Since your getting a VSS error that could mean the newer integration components of server 2016 might be causing you issues. I'm assuming your exporting the failing machine while running? If yes check the VM's event logs for VSS errors if any. Try and disable the backup integration service on the VM settings. If you are trying to the export the VM while running can you power off the VM and try exporting again? Are you fully up to date on server 2012 R2 patches and hotfixes? Since that is a newer OS level you could be missing something.

  • Hi,

Thanks for posting in our forum!

1.>>The issue we are experiencing is when I try to export the VM on one of the Host servers in the cluster the export will fail

Is there a related error pop-up window when the export fails. if yes, please upload the screenshot.

2.>>Out of the 10 virtual machines in the cluster this is the only server that I'm unable to export.

What's the difference between this problematic virtual machine and other virtual machines?

3.As Adam mentioned above, it is strange that the export of virtual machines fails with VSS errors, so it may be caused by integration services. It is recommended that you try again when the virtual machine is closed or unchecked VSS integration service in Hyper-V settings.

4.If it still not work, then using existing VHD to rebuild virtual machines is a good workaround.

    Hope this can help.

    Best Regards,

    Daniel

These are the errors I receive on the cluster:

    Event ID: 1205

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role '----i' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.

    Event ID:1069

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine ----' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role '----' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

2.What's the difference between this problematic virtual machine and other virtual machines?

This is not the only 2016 VM in this cluster. It is an Echange server though

3.As Adam mentioned above, it is strange that the export of virtual machines fails with VSS errors, so it may be caused by integration services. It is recommended that you try again when the virtual machine is closed or unchecked VSS integration service in Hyper-V settings.

Disabled guest integrations for backup and it still failed

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply!

We need to find error messages related to virtual machine export failure. 1205 and 1069 are cluster related errors.
