WSUS client is failing to report to WSUS, failing to get updates and reporting errors RRS feed

  • Question

  • One WSUS client is failing to report to WSUS, failing to get updates and reporting this error.

Other clients of the same WSUS server only suffer from the usual disagreement about whether there are updates to install but I'm used to that, I've given up trying to get a proper fix.

On the one which won't work I can "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update" without errors.  If I try to check with the WSUS server it fails with the above error.

    I did this:

    REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientId /f
    REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate" /v SusClientIdValidation /f
    net stop wuauserv
    del %windir%\windowsupdate.log
    del %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
    regsvr32 /s atl.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 /s mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 /s initpki.dll
    regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
    net start wuauserv
    wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

This resets the client so it's as if I haven't checked for updates before but doesn't fix the problem.  The client shows up in WSUS, says it hasn't reported and Windows Update fails with the same error.

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sus/archive/2008/09/18/wsus-clients-fail-with-warning-syncserverupdatesinternal-failed-0x80244010.aspx

"First of all this will only occur on new clients that have not synced with WSUS or clients which have had the datastore removed (%windir%\softwaredistribution)."

That's what I did above.  Clients check every day at 1100h, set by GPO.

"Second, the clients will only fail during the first scan but succeed on the second (or sometimes third).  The detection frequency can be configured by group policy or a registry setting and by default will occur every 22 hours."

So it should fix itself if you try again?

If I run Windows Update again I get the same error message but nothing is added to the log file.  No matter what I do I end up with a log file which looks like this (it repeats if I use the resetauthorization command):

  • Hi,

    >>2016-01-08 12:29:46:188 1160 1918 PT WARNING: SyncServerUpdatesInternal failed: 0x80244010

I've seen a lot of cases that unwell-maintained WSUS server may cause this issue.

A well maintained WSUS server needs running the server clean up wizard regularly to remove the unused updates.

    Best Regards.

  • I've been doing that but still not managed to get the clients and server to agree on whether they need updates.  There's a great deal of information about it on the internet, I recently started again, even manually removing the WSUS database since uninstall doesn't clear it.  The clients say they're OK and there's only minimal disagreement with Microsoft Update so I'm not too worried.
