Demoting Domain Controller in 2003 and Roles

Question
-
I have 2 domain controllers for a Windows 2003 environment
I want to demote one (dcpromo).
Will that automatically move all roles to the other domain controller or do I have to manually move them.
Thanks
Dave

Hi,
Before you demote a domain controller, verify that this domain controller is not the only global catalog and that it does not hold an operations master role. If this domain controller currently holds one or more operations master roles, transfer the operations master roles to another domain controller before demoting it.

It will transfer the roles but I'd move them gracefully prior just to make sure everything is healthy and working. Are you planning to run with only one DC...try to have a second DC.
Thanks

Hi Dave,
Just to clarify, do you mean your FSMO roles or roles as in DHCP/DNS? I assume FSMO but I just want to double check.
Thanks,
Joseph

I mean the FSMO roles that play into the AD. If I have only 2 DC's, if I demote one should the roles automatically move.
DHCP and DNS will remain on the server after its demoted.
I do plan to add another DC later this week.
Thanks

I'd add the third DC first then demote DC2. It just gives you an insurance policy in case the single DC goes down hard. I know it probably won't...but it the same reason we carry insurance :)
Thanks
Mike
