backing up sql using hyper v or agent RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I was wondering if it the method of backing up sql database through the hyper v method is supported or does the database have to be backed up using an agent.  I understand that i would have to restore the vhd and the mount etc etc and then pull the database from the drive and restore but i just wanted to confirm that it works.

to keep it simple lets say that agent level backup are not possible.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

if you try to restore the SQL Database through VM restore then you could loose more data than you could if you install an agent inside the Virtual Machine.

But it is supported to do so.

Restoring a VM will restore the database file to its state at the time of the backup then simply keep the VM running or extract the DB files to restore it elsewhere.
