SCCM- OSD error 0x800700A1

    Question

  • Hello,

I work help desk for a company, and we utilize SCCM OSD deployments to image machines. I have a machine that was successfully imaged in the past, but now I cannot get it to re-image.

To image, I boot from a disk, then plug in a password at the task sequence welcome, it retrieves avaliable policy, I then select the appropriate task sequence (in this case Windows 7x64 Role Based)... All that is good.

It then goes to Format and Partition the HDD

    I then receive:

Task Sequence: Windows 7 x64 Role Based has failed with the error code (0x800700A1). For more information, contact your system admin or helpdesk. Computer will automatically restart in 15 min.

I can image other machines fine. Here is some of the log if that helps... Thank You

  • This is old but wasn't really answered. If this is a new or blank disk then the problem most likely is that you are trying to use package that gets cached to the HD before it is formatted. Make sure that you partition and format the disk BEFORE any MDT Packages or other Packages are used. Obviously Josh's answer can be correct too depending on the details.  I hope this helps.

  • "Failed to resolve the source for SMS PKGID=WHQ00016"

One of the packages referenced by the task sequence is unavailable from the distribution point, so it's failing. Make sure your DP is up and accessible, or that the package exists and is up-to-date.

  • For us the issue was that UEFI boot was enabled. Had to enable Legacy boot then it worked for us.

  • I have had this occur when the disk was encrypted prior to trying to reimage.

Try wiping the drive first, even if your task sequence includes disk partitioning and formatting.

  • For future reference, I encountered this same error on two machines, P51 laptop and a new P520 desktop. It turned out the solution was to install the latest bios update.
