Explorer Icons? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone know what it means when an Explorer icon (for an .htm file) has 1) a red exclamation point (!), or 2) an orange cross overlayed on the lower right corner of the icon? This is not just an informational question; files with these indicators are not rendering properly in my online Help system (RoboHelp.)

  • Hi,

    This issue can be caused by the corrupted icon cache. I suggest you try the following steps:

    1. Reset the icon cache

         ==============

        1. Click the Start button, and click Computer .

        2. On the Tool bar, click Organize and choose Folder and Search Options .

        3. Click the View tab, and check to select the Show hidden files and folders option , and click OK .

        4. Then, enter the following directory:

        %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

        5. Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it as IconCache.db.old.

        6. Close the window, and restart the computer.

    2. Boot to the Clean Boot mode to check the result.

    3. Create a new user profile for test. If it work, you can refer to Fix a corrupted user profile.

    Hope this helps.
