Only owners of the storage can make backup VM's in CSV Cluster RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good afternoon, colleagues. Question is  BACKUP virtual machines in the cluster.
Configuration: 7 Node Microsoft Hyper-v Server 2008 with DPM 2012 agent
HP MSA 2000 as a repository for CSV. Nodes connected to the storage on FiberChanel. There are 4 lun's, a 1.5 Tb. In a cluster spinning bunch of virtual machines.  Only four nodes are the owners of the store.

The situation is very simple. Make a backup of virtual machines in the state online mode, directly from the node. ie BackUp I understand the virtual disks. In this article on technet  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757866.aspx # bkmk_unabletoprotectvm   indicated:

By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following conditions are true:

    • Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
    • The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.

Highlighted this point. I had a backup machine with 4 dynamic disks. Ie In this paper an error or if I try to restore a surprise? (unfortunately there was no time to check)

And the continuation of the question. The second VM, with 4 dynamic disks fail backup, until such time as I did LiveMigration to a node which was the owner of the volume. In what may be a problem? Or to do a normal backup in CSV cluster, virtual machines must be located on the same nodes that own the volumes? (this is nonsense)

I will be very grateful for the detailed advice.

  • Hi,

Answer-1) The term "dynamic disk" is unfortunatly confused with "dynamically expanding" disk in Hyper-V, and they are different.  In the technet link, we are talking about Windows Dynamic disk as seen in Windows disk management in the guest.  If the disks are BASIC disks, we can perform online backups.  If the disks show as "Dynamic" then the hyper-V writer will put the virtual machine into a saved state before it is backed up.

Answer-2) DPM requests that the CSV disk hosting the guest VM be moved to the node that has the running guest so we can create a snapshot of the csv disk.  If the CSV disk cannot be moved to the node hosting the VM, then the backup will fail.  Check to be sure all nodes can be possible owners of the csv disks.

  • Good afternoon. Thanks for the detailed response. How I can check that all the nodes can be the owners of the CSV drives? I tested it using the Management Console cluster, and all nodes can be owners. But, when i'm trying backup the vm and it's fail, if the node is not owner of the CSV disc. Why the nodes cannot automaticly take the ownership on the csv disks? Where i can fix it?

  • Hi,

Can you manually move each csv disks to every node in the cluster ?

Details of why the backup failed due to CSV not moving can be found in the dpmracurr.errlog on the node running the guest at the time of the failure.
