Hyper-V Guest IPv6 Address Not Reacheable from Internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • I don't know if this is question is suitable to this forum.  Let me know if there is a better one.

    We are running Windows 10 Pro on Hyper-V on Windows Server 2019 Standard and assigned the following IPv6 addresses to them:

    Host: Windows Server 2019: 2001:XXX:YYY::a000:1/64
    Guest: Windows 10: 2001:XXX:YYY::a001:1/64

    We can ping to both of them from all devices within 2001:XXX:YYY::/64 including our IPv6 gateway and can ping to the host from the Internet. However, pinging to the guest from the Internet does not work. I traceroute6 from my house and found it reached our gateway but wouldn't proceed to the guest. The firewall of gateway is currently turned off.

    Does anybody have an idea why this happens?
    Thank you so much.

  • Well, I could figure this out after all..

    Enabling VM guest Windows 10's "Inbound Rules - Virtual Machine Monitoring (Echo Request - ICMPv6-In)" firewall rule solved this problem.

    I didn't know about this rule and actually used a bridge device between a geteway and our network to monitor the packets. So, VM has its own rules...
