IE not prompting to open file as 'Read-Only' RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have several files which are linked to through UNC paths placed on an Intranet page.

My issue is, when a user has one of the files open, any other user who attempts to open the file is basically told to buzz off.

The thing is, I'm sure that I've seen IE prompt for the file to be opened as read-only, should another user attempt to open the file. If a user attempts to open the file through a standard shortcut on their desktop, they are informed that the document is locked for editing, and do receive the options of open as read-only or notify.

Is there anyway of forcing IE to produce this same dialog box, instead of a simple 'the file couldn't be opened'?

    Many thanks.
