User migration with SMP Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, all!

How can I realize hardlink user migration with SMP backup?

I've tried make smp backup before hardlink migration, but sccm ignored option "capture locally by hardlinks instead of copying files" and puts .mig file(same like on smp share) into userstate directory.

  • Hi,

Here is a important note in the following article.

"You cannot use a state migration point and use hard-links to store the user state data at the same time."

How to Manage the User State in Configuration Manager

  • To be quite honest, a hardlink migration with SMP is quite useless. The idea of a hardlink migration is that it stores pointers to the files locally on the device. As soon as you want to copy that to a share or a SMP, it will copy the complete file and not the pointer, which makes sense because the pointer would be useless otherwise. That also means that if you want to use the SMP, skip the hardlink and just do a "normal" user state migration.

  • Hi, Peter!

Yeah, I know about hardlinks and smp migration.

I want backup user state to smp(using vsc not hardlinks) and after that create local hardlinks and migrate with hardlinks.

i.e. I want use hardlinks to reduce deployment time and have smp backup at one time
