Automatic Replies might not always work RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am getting some users say that the Automatic Replies are not working on a general mailbox.  Which is used for inbound request, they have set a reply to say it has been received and will be looked at.

When i attempt to send an internal email to that account, i get the Automatic Reply before sending the message, it appears above the TO field.

I have tested from 3 externals and they all received an Automatic Reply.

My user is saying some customers are not getting it, how can i prove that the reply went out the business?

would you say it could be their spam filters stopping it?

    YES,
Many SMTP Gateways blooks "Automatic Replies" because they don't include an Return-Path.

  • An OOF will only be sent once to any sender when its turned on. Hours is not included in the equation.

  • Thank you, re affirming my opinion.

just want 2 or 3 more people to confirm it and i would be happy with that answer

Or some more testing if any i can do?

I can confrim it  :) Martina is correct as usual.

In Exchange 2007 and beyond, Microsoft changed the behavior to make auto-replies/OOFs etc. RFC compliant to prevent mail-loops. Alot of anti-spam products see those <> in the FROM as potential spmer and drop them by default.

  • Thank You Andy D- :)

    @Hussain
Just out of curiosity...How do then handle the Automatic Replies on the Shared Mailbox?
Do they turn it off/on every day or?
Remember that an OOF will only be sent once...

  • Thanks guys

Martina - No it is left on, but as i understand it only sends the OOF once every so many hours to one address.

it is not just once to an email address,as i have tested this at different times and got replies.

Yes, I am serious. That is how OOF works so maybe your problem can be explain with that and the OOFs beeing blocked because of the missing Return-Path

  • ok

If they want a reply to always go out they would need to think of another way of working

    great thanks for your help.

what i find wrong is, lets say someone has an Out Of Office on (a user, not mailbox) saying they dont have access to emails and will respond when they can. (no Date to when)

someone sends an email gets that reply tries again in a week (the auto reply is STILL on and untouched) and no reply.  they will assume the person has access to the mailbox again.

    True!

...but as you mentioned in your first post in this thread, you saw the Automatic Reply as a Mailtip before you even sent the message, so the problem is not really that big internally.

  • externally it is.

I understand that, but its really up to the user what to put in an OOF.
