Windows 10 and WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking at the Products and Classifications on WSUS for Windows 10 and my question is what is the difference between the "Windows 10 and later drivers" category and the "Windows 10 and later upgrade & servicing drivers" category?

  • Hi,

These categories aren’t determined by WSUS, but by the publishing/release teams: WSUS just shows them in the list as soon as one update in that category has been published.  With that said, the specific-yet-similar categories are used as a way to scope distribution of certain content.  Without getting into the finer details of it, the publishing system needs this granularity in order to properly target the update content to those that need it, and to avoid spamming the rest.

With that said, if you’re actually synching driver categories (most people usually just import them), then you’ll want both of these in your list of products to be synched.  No need to worry about duplication, since this is only about determining applicability of a given update, which either is or isn’t applicable to the target machine.

Finally, the reason you’re seeing so many driver updates is that there are that many driver updates.  No amount of fancy category manipulation will get around this volume.   
