SCCM 2007 clients --> 2012 advice required RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have a domain A with a SCCM 2007 primary site and Windows 7 clients in it

I have another domain B with SCCM 2012 primary site and yet no clients in it. There is a trust between the domains A and B and packages, collections and advertisements are already migrated from 2007 -> 2012 server.

So far so good, but what is the easiest way to migrate the clients ?

    1. rejoin clients from domain A to domain B and then set the sitecode to the new SCCM 2012 site. Then SCCM 2012 will do the upgrade of the client.

    2. first assign the clients in domain A to the SCCM 2012 server in domain B and after that rejoin the clients from domain A to domain B.

Preferred is the method described in point 2, but how am I able to do that ?

Will it be possible to create a package/program within my SCCM 2007 environment which installs(upgrade) the SCCM 2007 client to a 2012 client with the SMSMP and SITECODE properties ? So after that the client is still connected to domain A, but connected to SCCM 2012 in domain B...I hope ..

    Any advice is welcome.

  • If you want to use option 2, this it how it can be done (overview)...

    1. Change clients to use the new SCCM 2012 server (change the site code)
This can be done by a simple script

    2. Upgrade the ConfigMgr client
    use whatever method you perfer...

    3. Use a Task Sequence to migrate the client to the new domain

  • Hi Ronni,

Thanks for your answer....I was thinking about that scenario too, but I think it does not work since the client is located in domain A and the SCCM 2012 site is only avalable in domain B. When I ran a script to reconfigure the SCCM 2007 client to connect to new SCCM 2012 site code, then it could not be found by the client i guess and then it will not connect to it....or do i miss something here and will it work ?

  • As ConfigMgr also supports workgroup clients it really doesnt matter what domain the client is joined to.

But you need to specify the site server/management point too.

  • So I can't just set the site by using a simple script, but need to ran CCMSETUP.EXE with at least the SMSSITECODE and MP parameters ?

Would it be possible to start that CCMSETUP.EXE from the SCCM 2007 environment (package/program), so that after running it my client is connected to the SCCM 2012 environment ?

And do I need to run the SCCM 2007 CCMSETUP.EXE or the SCCM 2012 CCMSETUP.EXE version ?

  • Yes to all your questions :)

In this scenario where you want to use ccmsetup.exe, you should use the version matching the site you want to join.

Then the client will be upgrade in the same step (1 and 2).
