Missing content types, missing site columns, and look-up values not retained from site template RRS feed

  • Question

  • (Running April CU on both production and dev).

I have noticed we are missing some bespoke (manually created, not through a feature) content types (e.g. we should have "Findings" as a content type) and missing site columns (e.g. we should have "ARR Heading" as a site column). My restore of the last site collection backup onto development also has this issue. Perhaps related to this, is that columns using site column (which is not listed in the site columns) with a look-up do not retain their values when saving a site as a template, and creating a site using that template. The site used for a template and the new site reside in the same site collection. Going to list setting for both lists displays the look-up list correctly, and new items have the look-up values in the select box.

For example, the "ARR Heading" look-up value is not retained into a site created from a template (where the values were present). But if we create a new item or edit an item, the look-up list is populated so it "knows where the list is" so to speak.

My guess is that the issues are related, but in any case the missing content types and site columns should definitely be present. It should be noted that these site columns and content types were created manually using the user interface, so it's not a case of incorrect custom features that created them.

Some steps I have taken so far are:

stsadm -o deactivatefeature -name ctypes -url http://dev03/sites/ERPTemplate
stsadm -o activatefeature -name ctypes -url http://dev03/sites/ERPTemplate
    iisreset

Then tried opening the "Item" content type (under "List Content Types") > Advanced settings, ensuring that "Update all content types inheriting from this type" is set to "Yes" and click OK. Followed by an iisreset.

Have also tried reference the site columns directly by amending the URL, but it says site column not found.

NB I am not seeing the last "look-up values not retained" issue on dev however, just the missing columns and content types.

  • Hi Alex,

The original site columns yes, would have been populated by a site template solution that was migrated from dev to production. Sites were then created using this template. The original site template solution may have been deactivated, but the sites created using this template still existed. Future templates were then taken from those sites. We did get an issue previously whereby we could save a site as a template if the original site template it had been created from had been deactivated - this was resolved by updating to April CU and backing up and restoring the site collection (before this all content types and all site columns were missing!). So it sounds like if you deactivate the solution, even if the site columns and content types are in use by various sites, these are "removed" (to some extended anyway) from the gallery?

Edit: But re-activiting a new feature of the template doesn't put them back in (and the site template solution is active at the moment).

    Regards,

    Ben

  • Ben,

You mentioned site templates.  Are the site templates still activitated in the Sandbox Solutions?

If you have deployed a site template in a new environment using sandbox solutions with content types you need to ensure the wsp is activited.
