PowerBI with large cosmoDB RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I was trying to use cosmoDB to store  historical data. This database increase without limit (thounsand of records every day). I want to use embebed poweBI to generate reports into our application. The user application must specified a range of dates to view the report. PowerBI doesn´t support directQuery and import method will work only the first weeks.

We evaluate the use of SQL Database but has a limit storage (500GB) and is more expensive that azure table storage or azure cosmoDB. My choice was cosmoDB for compatibility with mongoDB interface so I can reuse a lot of tools to work with it.

Could you give me some workaround?

  • One method to do this is to use Power BI Direct Query > Apache Spark (HDI) > Cosmos DB so you can have a direct query configuration.  Here are some instructions on how to do this: https://github.com/Azure/azure-cosmosdb-spark/wiki/Configuring-Power-BI-Direct-Query-to-Azure-Cosmos-DB-via-Apache-Spark-(HDI).  HTH!

  • Hi Francisco. Have you tried using Power BI query parameters? I'm not sure if they're supported by embedded reports, but you might give them a try.
