Exchange NDR

    Question

  • Dear All,

    I have question about NDR:

If any external users sends mail to our organization, and by mistake if they type incorrect ID, they dont receive any NDR. I checked our SPAM filter and it allows the email , even if the id is incorrect. it forwards the mail to Exchange , but there no such mailbox , also no NDR generated

I told to my security team ideally for external users NDR should come from SPAM Filter, rather than Exchange

I tested Internal users and it was working Fine , i am getting proper NDR, as Exchange is responsible for internal communication

Apart from this when i send to external user ,and type incorrect address i get the NDR.

Now please explain is my understanding correct, for incoming external users NDR should be triggered by SPAM Filter, and if Spam filter accepting it is there way Exchange can send NDR

  • Hi Vgahod,

I'm afraid your understanding is incorrect. NDR messages are a common type of status notification, they are sent by Exchange server, instead of SPAM filter.

Moreover, if the sender send a message to a not exist recipient, the local sending server will generate the NDR message and sends it to the sender of the original message.

Details see: DSNs and NDRs in Exchange 2013
