Windows 2012 and WSUS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have installed Windows 2012 R2 on a machine with 8 GB of memory and have activated the WSUS role. I have successfully built the WSUS database with the updates that I would like to push out to Windows 7 client machines. I have set up a LAN that both the WSUS server and the clients are connected to. Each client has a registry hack that points it to the WSUS server. When I try to update a client it will successfully communicate with the WSUS server and inform me, via Windows update, that it needs x number of updates but when I try to have the client download and install those updates I get a WindowsUpdate error 80244020 on the client. According to Microsoft that error is like an HTTP 500 error - the server does not support the functionality required to fulfill the request. Can anyone assist me in figuring out what the problem is. I am using the port 8530 and that is what the client is listening on. I also have configured the server firewall to allow traffic on that port.

I used to run WSUS under Windows 2003 server with NO problems at all. It has only been since I tried to use Windows 2012 R2 and WSUS that I am now having a problem which I DESPERATELY need to fix.

    Thank you in advance!!!!

  • yeah it's not a big deal to re-install it if you don't mind doing the work.

you have to uninstall WSUS & IIS roles, and Windows Internal Database feature and any related RSAT features.

delete these folders after rebooting the server:

    C:\inetpub

    C:\Program Files\Update Services

    C:\Windows\WID

whatever folder you put the wsus content into should also be purged out

reboot once again and try re-installing wsus

one last thing before you do all this: verify that your GPO has port 8530 defined in it after the wsus server name or IP

  • looks like a pretty common error code, there are a few things you can look for, mainly:

    1. do you have proxy servers defined in IE or in the WSUS console
    2. I know you have made the exceptions in the firewall but make sure the win7 client can actually telnet to port 8530 of the wsus server
    3. make sure the system time of the client and server match
    4. make sure windows update service and BITS service are not disabled

finally, if you can't figure it out you need to provide the snippet of %windir%\windowsupdate.log file where the failure is encountered so we can dig further

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

1.) I do not have a proxy server defined to IE or the WSUS console.

2.) I can successfully TELENT from the client to the WSUS server using port 8530.

3.) Date and time on both the client and the server are the same.

4.) The Windows Update service and the BITS service are ENABLED.

I am attaching the WindowsUpdate.log file snippet which takes in account the time frame that I actually

    performed the operation.

This may not be enough of a snippet for solving the problem. But the log file is too big to paste in here and I do not see a way to attach the file.

  • BG_E_HTTP_ERROR_501 (0x801901F5)
The server does not support the functionality required to fulfill the request. In IIS 6, this error indicates that BITS uploads are not enabled on the virtual directory (vdir) on the server.

not quite sure how to get around that, it doesn't seem like a very common issue.  it should not be happening if you haven't touched IIS since WSUS was installed

let's try the easy route first by running the fixit tool on one of the win7 clients a test to see if it helps:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

    Tuesday, June 30, 2015 12:54 PM
  • I ran the fixit tool against my Windows 7 client with the following results:

"Service registration is missing or corrupt - not fixed"

"Windows Update error 0x80070057 (2015-07-01-T-09_36_34A) - not fixed".

Remember I am running WSUS as a ROLE under Windows 2012 R2 server.

Thanks again for all your help!!!!

  • alright, try upgrading the update agent on that win7 host:

  • Downloaded the update agent for 64bit Windows 7 and applied it to the Windows 7 client. Attempted Windows Update and am still getting the same error. If I were to eliminate the role on the Windows 2012 server for WSUS would that remove the database, etc.? Would that be a prudent thing to do and then recreate the role for WSUS and then the database to see if we can eliminate the error?
