Problem with Windows Media Player RRS feed

  • Question

  • About 4 days ago, Windows Media Player and Media Center stopped playing the audio from any DVD. It plays audio from CD's fine. I've:

    Checked the volume

    Checked the mute

    Upgraded the media player

Still nothing. Again, I have video, but no audio. I do not get an error message?

    HELP!

  • Verify the digital sound cable which connects your DVD drive with mother board is well connected, re-plug it and give it a try. It should work. The problem concerns hardware issue not Windows one

    Good luck

  • It does exist, just while you're in WMP window, click Alt button, it will show Tools Bar, then perform steps shown up.

    Good luck

  • how?
    Saturday, December 9, 2006 9:08 PM
  • How do I do this? I'll try, but I don't think the DVD drive is the issue. Not only is there no audio from the DVD itself, but also no audio from DVD(VOB files) on my hard drive. Like I said, very bizare-

Only DVD's and DVD associated files are giving me this headache.

I have three different programs for playing DVD's:

     Windows Media Player 11

    Media Center

    Dell Cineplayer

All other audio/video files are fine.

  • If the problem occurs in your Desktop computer, just remove case cover and check cables coming out of DVD drive, you should find 3, data cable, power cable and Audio cable (small thin cable), that one should be linked to mother board in somewhere (mostly: under the processor from left side). Be sure it's linked well.

    Good luck

  • This is bizarre.  I am having the exact same problem with WMP.  WMP 11 will play .mp3's fine, good sound and everything.  But when I go to  play a .vob file (saved to the hard drive from a dvd - not playing directly off the dvd), the video looks good on WMP but there is no sound - completely mute!  The same file will play fine in Real Player - sound and video comes through crystal clear, so that seems to rule out that there is a hardware issue - the problem has to be with WMP.

Does this sound like a codec issue?  PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

  • It is not a hardware issue.  I have the same problem.  My dvd player worked fine, I was able to play vob files fine and then something happened and now no audio.  The video works fine but no audio.  I can stay play itunes, cds, avi files, pc sounds no problem but no audio with the dvd or vob files using windows media player and/or media center.  Based on what I have researched it appears it has something to do with windows media player 11 upgrade and that if you restore to before the upgrade, your sound should work. It did not work for me so I may be starting from scratch or waiting until windows vista and hoping that it fixes the problem.

  • Anyone else find the ac3 filter helpful?
    Wednesday, December 27, 2006 3:53 PM
  • No, but I did download the trial version of Cyberlink PowerDVD and my sound started working again on the dvd player as well as the .vob files.  I don't know what will happen after the trial runs out but its working fine now.

  • Yes, this solved my problem.  I downloaded a new version at the beginning of December and since then, none of my DVDs have been playing sound, regardless of the program I used.  Once I downloaded the ac3 filter, the problem was solved.  Try this link and click on the newest version to download.

  • I experienced the same problems.  Soon as I installed the beautiful new windows media player I lost audio on my dvds.  Use the link from Bellator, download and install the software and all should be well.

I installed K-Lite Codec pack to fix some other problems and then I lost the use of media player on some files.

I just installed the AC3 filter and now everything seems to be working fine.....

  • Many thanks to you guys on this thread -- For some reason, my audio in WMP11 also stopped working on video files a short time ago.  Using any other player worked fine, and audio-only files worked fine in WMP.  This happened on two machines - Laptop at work running WMP11, and desktop at home running WMP10 (but I have the Zune software loaded, which behaves an awful lot like WMP11.  I also had previously upgraded to WMP11, but downgraded to support an old PDA - but I digress).

My gut told me it was a codec issue, so I downloaded and ran the GSpot utility to check my codecs.  They were clean.

This thread allowed me to find the answer - the ac3filter worked just great on one machine (have not checked the other, yet, but I'm an optimist).

So it appears it WAS a codec issue, even though GSpot didn't identify it.  And strangely enough, when playing the files affected within the GSpot utility, they work just fine.  There definitely appears to be a WMP11/Zune incompatibility with a codec somewhere.

I am running WMP11.0.5721.5145 on XP SP2 at work.

WMP 10.00.00.4036 at home, with the Zune software 1.2.5511.0.

I guess the surprising part to me is that I don't think I downloaded any updates at the time the audio stopped working, and it stopped working on both systems at about the same time.  I thought it might be a DRM issue because I did open some DRM-protected content (an eAudio book I checked out from the local library web site), but other than that, I don't think I downloaded anything.

    Thanks again to all,

  • Same thing here, could not play mpeg's on WMP with sound. Sound was gone. I think it all happened after I downloaded version 11. Tried rolling back, still nothing. After spending sometime on the troubleshooting guide, finally did a search on my own instead of letting MS help bot leading me, ended up at this thread. Used the ar3filter, BAM, fixed. Thanks to all who helped.

  • I have a different problem with wmp 11. When trying to play Vob files from the hard drive TS_video folders, my video window is reduced to 60% and plays in the upper left hand corner, without any control  over it.  It sometimes  crashes the computer to reboot.  The sound is OK.  Any ideas!

  • Hi there: I have been working on (WMP11) ever since I installed it. The sound never did work when playing DVD'S. But it did work under Nero Showtime Player; So I knew it wasn't a hardware problem.

I hate software that dosn't work right, like microsoft Windows Pro x64 (WMP11). This is expensive software we pay for and it is suppose to work right????

Never the less thank you so very much for the link to the AC3 filter. After I installed  it the sound fired right up... I almost didn't belive it THANKS  Cecil D. V........ P.S. Thank Bellator... If you have no sound go to Bellator and the link he provided is a God Send!  FANTASTIC!

  •

I would guess you have a croupt audio driver. need to back up your media codes and uninstall them, then reboot machine then reinstall drivers... then sit back and listen and see your movies... I have run into this myself. but I could hear the audio and not see the video on some dvds but then punt in a diffrent disk and it would be the other way around.. i could see it but couldnt hear it... update your media codes and you will be all set...
