SQL Server 2005/2008 Workgroup Edition 4GB RAM Limitation Question RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can you run SQL Server Workgroup edition on a Server/ OS that has more than 4GB of RAM (Eg Server / OS has 8GB Of RAM) and SQL Workgroup edition will only use up to 4GB of RAM.  Or is the workgroup edition only allowed to run on Servers/ OS's that have up to 4GB of RAM.  I see there is a SQL Workgroup 64bit installer...   I cannot find this detailed information anywhere.  Obviously I do not want to go against licensing restrictions, however just wondering if this is possible.  Thanks...

  • It is perfectly OK to install on a server which has more RAM. SQL Server just won't use that memory. In fact, you can install several instances and have each instance use 4GB each.
