    I have a very wierd situation.  This past weekend we moved all of our file shares from a Windows 2003 box to a Windows Server 2008 x64 box.  We have 3 users who are using Windows XP x64 that see the issue I describe below.

    When these 3 users look at some of the folders using Windows Explorer in the Shared folder it seems that the first 3 files or folders are missing.  I have Windows 7 and I can see the files/folders.  Users with Windows XP 32 bit can see them also.  It just seems to be affecting Windows XP x64 users. Not all folders they access have missing files.

    We are using a single Windows 2003 Domain.  The file server in question is not a domain controller.  The users with the problem have Full Control rights for both the share and the folders. 

    Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    It's difficult to say. File system corruption may be exposed in many different ways. You might try deleting/recreating the shares as first step.

    Is it three specific files? Have you tried moving them elsewhere to see the effect? What happens if you logon using your credentials to the XPx64 machines?

    I tried logging on with the Domain Admin user and I get the same results.  I also had the users log onto a Windows XP 32 bit machine and they can see the files from there.  It is only when viewing from a Windows XP x64 computer.

    The files/folders are in multiple folders.  Not all folders on these shares act this way.

    If I type the path in the address bar in Windows Explorer I can see the missing directories.  They just do not show up when viewing windows explorer

    If I move the folder to another folder they can see it.  When I move it back they don't again.

    Here is what is wierd.  It seems that it is the first 3 files/folders that don't show up.  If I add a file or folder with a name like "abc" the user doesn't see that folder but they can then see one of the folders that was previously missing.  Deleting the abc folder causes them not to see the folder again.  It seems the the first three folders/files alphabetically are the ones they cannot see no matter what they are.

    Yes, that is strange. You might try deleting/recreating the shares but it sounds like some file system corruption. You can run chkdsk in read-only mode to test.

    If the file system was corrupt would it affect only Windows XP x64 computers?  If I access the Network folder from Regular XP 32-bit and Windows 7 everything looks fine.

    Did you manage to find a solution to your problem?

     

    I am having the same problem with the same combination of operating systems and the same first three files in some, but not all directories.

    It's a bug in Windows XP x64.
