  • Question

  • Hi, i upgraded from 2012 R2 > 1511 yesterday, everything was working after the first update.

Then i did update to 1606, then things stopped working.

Now i cannot even open the console:

I can see there is alot of erros in the CMUpdate.log here is some of it:

In the event viewer i get the same error every minute:

Solution: Review the previous status messages to determine the exact reason for the failure. Site Component Manager will automatically retry the reinstallation in  minutes. To force Site Component Manager to immediately retry the reinstallation, stop and restart Site Component Manager using the Configuration Manager Service Manager.

  • Hi again, I had a case with Microsoft support, They found out the 1606 update had upgraded some of the components, so basicly i was running a hybrid between 1511 and 1606.

I had to revert back to backup to the 1511 version, then I ran the update again and it installed successfully.

  • Is your SQL Server up and running and accepting connections? What was your initial ConfigMgr version? Something like 1303 doesn't exist...

  • It was regular 2012 r2 (without Servicepack).

Yes i can atleast connect to the sql from another computer.(if thats what you are asking)

When i open the management studio on the sccm server i get the following error:

  • SCCM does not have version 1303, this must be SCCM 2012

    >>Failed to connect to the SQL Server, connection type: SMS ACCESS.

    >>[SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Cannot open database "CM_XX" requested by the login. The login failed.

Seems you have problem with SQL server, check if the SQL server is up and running and, your SQL is on same server where SCCM is installed?

    It's the access issue.

Does SCCM account have permission on SCCM DB? SQL server is accessible from site server?

  • Yes the SQL is on the same server as SCCM.

And yes I can connect to the SQL with the same account from different machine

  • SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service is running ? did you try to stop and start?

    have you rebooted the server?

If you are able to connect the sql from another computer then there would not be any issue, you could try to reinstall the management studio again.

  • can you verify WMI access is a-ok?  I have seen this need to be reset / reconfigured after an upgrade.

  • Yes, service is running and I've also tried restarting the server without success.

  • The WMI access seems to be ok, its set to "SMS Admins" with Remote Enable and Enable account.

  • Is this error saying that the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER itself can't reinstall or that this component is alerting about another component?  (what does the rest of the log file say?)

On 09/16/16 14:59:57, component SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER on computer XXX reported:  Site Component Manager failed to reinstall this component on this site system.

Also - at this point it seems like you have may have a bunch of problems.  Is the eventvwr on the server (application and system logs) full of bad news as well?  It is kind of unsettling that even the SQL management console is not functioning.  Have you considered restoring to 1511 and trying again?  Assuming you took a backup befor the 1606 upgrade. If not, rolling back to 2012 is an option too.  Site restores are fun.  Every admin should do one from time to time.

  • Also - how are your clients doing?  Are they getting policy, sending inventory, getting MP info, etc?  (policyagent.log, inventoryagent.log, locationservices.log, etc)
