DPM Tape Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I am taking backup in tape drive of my exchange 2010 mail boxes through DPM 2012. I have some questions;

    1. My backup data base size is 1.1 TB. I have tape drive having capacity of 1.6 TB. i have define retention period for tape drive is 3 week with daily backup.My question is , Is this tape drive is enough capacity to hold three weeks data backup?
    2. Is there any notification or indication in DPM when my tape drive will be full or require another one to proceed.
    3. I want to take backup with following;
    •     One week backup in one tape drive and will be used this tape drive after a month.
    •     Monthly backup in every end of month.

    Kindly guide me.

  • 1. That depends on the changing rate as i assume you are doing daily differential backups and a weekly full ?

    2. No. DPM cannot estimate how much data it can write to the tape in advance as it depends on compression rate etc. But of course you will get an alert, when the tape is full and no data can be written to it.

    3. I can only assume here again what you mean:

    You want to use one tape for three weeks where you store your 1.1TB data + 21 daily differentials ?
    That might or might not work, depending on the change rate of your Exchange Mailbox stores.

    I don't see any problems to fit a monthly full backup on your 1.6tb tape when you only have 1.1tb data.
