    Even if Windows XP is not supported anymore, you always need to buy a license if you want to use it legally.
    I'd better suggest you to consider at least Windows 7, of course.

  • It will never be free.. even windows 3.1 you need a legal license to run.. or Dos 6.22 nothing from microsoft is free... even the "Free upgrades" have fine print where you sell your soul to advertising agencies.. 

    You would be smart to use Windows 7 X86 or Windows 8.1 X86.. 

    You could go windows 10, but if you aren't replacing your hardware, you will have a ton of driver issues, and it's just not worth it..
