DPM 2010 Secondary Server Trouble RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have setup a secondary dpm server (DPM2) to provide disaster recovery for our primary server (DPM1).  On the secondary I have setup a protection group to backup the primary and I have selected the various Protected Servers from the primary.  The issue is that the primary server itself does not show up in the Protected Servers list even though it is in fact protecting its local resources.  Is this by design, or I am missing something here?

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hi,

By Design, ANY DPM agent that is protecting a data source on any other DPM server will prevent secondary protection from working.

    Examples:

    1) DPM1 protecting local data sources (hyper-V guest for example) cannot have secondary protection because it's local DPMRA service owns the local machine.

    2) DPM1  <--Cross protection---> DPM2 - Both DPM machines have DPMRA ownership of each other, therefore DPM3 cannot protect either machine.

It sounds like condition 1) is what you have done.
