TMG Forefront Cluster RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a client who would like to setup a TMG Cluster.

Until now, I had never tried such implementation and I would like to know how many servers the client needs.

    AFAIK, The client needs:

    • A TMG server that will act as the first cluster node
    • A TMG server that will act as the second cluster node
    • An EMS server that will manage the two nodes

In total, the client will need to use 3 servers for a cluster based on the use of two nodes.

Can anyone confirm that this correct?

  • Your suggestion will work.

You can slim it down by one machine by installing the array as a standalone array. This means the following:

    1. Install node 1

    2. Install node 2

    3. On node 2 (or one for that matter...), run the join array wizard and point it to node 1.

This will create a standalone array where node 1 will host the configuration.

Having an EMS based installation is good if you are planning to deploy another array or standalone server that will be managed by the same EMS or if you are planning to deploy an EMS replica (e.g. a second EMS that replicates with the first). You cannot replicate the configuration if you have a standalone array.

If you are only going to have these two servers, adding an EMS to the equation will imho just add complexity.
