EASIEST way to Migrate from an old Windows 2003 server to a new Windows 2008 server

Question
-
I currently have a Dell PowerEdge 840 server running Windows Small Business Server 2003. I just purchased a Dell PowerEdge T410 with Windows Server 2008 pre-installed on it. What is the easiest way to take EVERYTHING from the old server to the new server? Can I use the backup wizard and restore into server 2008, or what do you recommend? I have an external hard drive that I can use. Thanks!Wednesday, August 17, 2011 3:26 AM

Do you want to move from SBS to Non SBS environment i.e. regular server(Standard or Enterprise edition), if yes, you can join windows 2008 to windows 2003 SBS domain & transfer all the data to windows 2008.You need to prepare the forest/domain before you can configure windows 2008 as an domain controller & transfer all the FSMO role.
Note: SBS in domain should hold FSMO role & before you can transfer to non SBS server DC, you need to run transition pack to make it non SBS domain.

I would advice hire a consultant, since there are few different steps like running transition pack to convert it to non-SBS domain. SBS migration guys are experts.

Hello,
backup and restore is NOT possible that way. Windows server 2003 backup cannot be used on Windows server 2008 and also to restore a DCs system state requires the same hardware.
In yor case please use the SBS forum, as they are the experts also for migration to a regular Windows domain.
