IE9 inserting smart quotes into web forms RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a client who is using IE9 to enter data into a database for a web based application. When he uses the single quote key he is getting the fancy curled apostrophe like happens with MS Word's smart quotes. He does have that enabled in Word but does the setting in Word also control IE? The behavior is not happening in Google Chrome.

This is more than an issue for just this one client. If others have this happen then it's a problem. It's a problem because when a search is done for a name like L'Arnie it is not finding the name where the apostrophe is one of the other codes.

  • Hi,

look for updates for their keyboard drivers.

    and

tools>Internet Options>General tab, 'Fonts' button... the default font for English speaking locales is Times new roman. "Accessibility" button... "Ignore font styles specified on web pages" may be checked.

    and

View>Encoding - what have they selected?

Examine the style font-family rules in your web application.... generally I don't use them at all and let the users preferences prevail.

and a utf-8 characterset meta covers most languages.
