GPO for IE RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

We have IE 8, 9 and we control them using GPO.

Now we have started  IE 10, 11 for new machines. But OS is still Windows 7. And we will have all 4 versions of IE for some more time.

    1. Do we need a new GPO for IE 10, 11 or can the existing one be used?

    2.  IF we create a new GPO for IE 10, 11, do we migrate all settings from IE 8,9 ?

How can this be done and how can we manage IE 10, 11 on Windows 7 with RSAT tools?

    Many Thanks!!!

  • Hi,

There're some differences about GPOs applied to these different versions of IE. for example, you might noticed that you can only use GPP to IE 8, and IE Group Policy Preferences do not support IE 9. but Internet Explorer Group Policy preference are not as easily updated in Windows 7 and you will need to use a Windows 8+RSAT/2012 computer to edit the IE 10 Preferences settings, the same situation for IE 11.

And IEM is missing since IE 10, so some settings will not take effect, but you can use GPP, Administrative Templates (.admx), and the IEAK instead.

And there're some conditions to deploy IE 10/11 using .admx. you can fins informations in the two links below

These reference links can also be helpful for you.

Internet Explorer Group Policy Preferences do not apply to Internet Explorer 9 in a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain environment

Appendix B: Replacements for Internet Explorer Maintenance

In a word, many ways can be used to deploy IE 10/11, but you need to pay attention to some important points that some Internet Explorer settings can not be deployed via IEM since IE 10 and GPPs will not work for IE 10 and later if you're using Windows 7 with RSAT tools.
