Selection of Environment (Operating System) for Sequence Machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greeting,

Say the target machine is remote desktop server ( windows 2012 R2 64 bit), what is the best way to pickup the sequence machine? I mean windows 7, 8, 8.1  or 32 64 bit? for App-v 5.0 SP3

    Thanks

  • You sequence on the OS that matches your target platform. In a mixed environment take the lowest OS and use that. You'll find very few applications actually check they are being installed on a desktop OS, if they do there are ways and means around that like shims or potentially sequencing on Windows 8.1. Before you start sequencing you should check the compatibility of any applications with your target environment.

  • It is always recomended to use the OS which closely resembles Target Environment. Sucess Ratio will be Good if we do so. You can use Windows Server 2012 R2 64 Bit in your case.

If not possible use the Next Lowest Version. With this Applications some times fails to work.

  • If it is so then I would suggest you to see if you can get Server Versions of Applications. AppV is not a solution for OS Compatibility. If not possible, then you can give a try in Sequencing on Win 7 or 8 & test them in Server 2012. Most of the cases Applications will work. But, there may be chances for Failure.

But, you can sequence 32 bit Applications on 64 bit OS. This wouldn't be a Problem.

32 Bit Apps Install in 64 Bit OS.

But, 64 Bit Apps do not Install in 32 Bit OS.

  • Always perform a initial validation whether the application works fine with the given target machine(in your case windows 2012 R2 64 bit). If it works fine, then choose windows 2012 R2 64 bit alone as target machine while sequencing.

In case, if it fails try to analyze the issue and compatibility as why the application fails. Based upon that you can choose the target platform during sequencing.
