Does the SBS edition of SQL 2008 replace the Workgroup edition that was in SQL 2005? I no longer see a Workgroup edition

  • Since no one had replied to this originally and I see it has had quite a few views, here's the current information on SQL as of 8/3/2013. For SBS 2008 which is what I think Andrew was first asking about, the built in version for SBS monitoring is SQL Server 2005 Express. Do not remove that version per: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794697(v=ws.10).aspx

Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition includes 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft® SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business (can only be ran in an SBS 2008 domain). See notes in the above mentioned URL.

For SBS 2011 Standard, it comes with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Check out the SQL Server 2008 Website for more info on it: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=207298

SBS 2011 no longer has a Premium SKU, but rather a Premium Add-On SKU that you purchase in addition to your SBS Standard 2011 or SBS Essentials 2011 licensing. The Premium Add-On (SBS 2011 POA) has SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition.

For the Windows Server 2012, the "SBS" product in the line up is Windows Server 2012 Essentials. SQL and Exchange no longer have "SBS" versions to go along with the SBS/Essentials line, and there are no longer Premium Add-On SKU's for the SBS/Essentials family. You will now have to purchase full product. There is a product datasheet (as of the time of this post) at:

Hope that helps out whoever else stumbles across this post.
