SMS 2003 to 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently have a SMS 2003 in production. We don't care about migrating anything from the old to the new system(Different VM).   Not a big deal to make the collections and remaking the packages not a big deal either.   So in doing a SCCM 2012 deployment what would we have to take into account while the old SMS 2003 system is there for a bit?

I recognized don’t want to set up any boundary overlap during the sccm deployment.

Different site code for new site.

My SMS 2003 has SMS_SLP in SMS_MP in wins, how will that effect SCCM 2012?

Will I have to into account for any AD Schema updates I do for SCCM 2012

Are there any other issues I have not thought of?

Everything seems to be written from Brand new deployment or a 2007 to 2012 move.

    • The old SMS records in WINS shouldn't be a problem as long as your ConfigMgr clients can get there MP from either the AD, DNS or during the client installation. Another option is setting SMSDIRECTORYLOOKUP to NOWINS to prevent the client from ever checking in WINS for a MP.
    • The schema extentions are unchanged from ConfigMgr 2007, but since you are still running SMS 2003 a schema update is needed.

  • When you're migrating side-by-side the most important thing to keep in mind are the boundaries, don't overlap them between sites.

Any other considerations due to the presence old SMS 2003 system besides the ones I listed?   Thanks for the info on the Wins and any issues with the Schema update.
