Lync 2010 ISDN capabilities. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Can we use the regular ISDN line for Lync 2010. So that we can have a direct video calls to devices such as sony VC which uses the ISDN line.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

You can connect regular ISDN to Lync, but it is done via a gateway which essentially converts the ISDN to SIP to Lync can understand it. There are also Survivable Branch Appliances that as well as being a gateway can provide additional voice resiliance.

Here is a list of SBA's. The same providers also do basic gateways suitable for ISDN.

The above gateways are for voice. Video to your Sony VC unit may be more challenging. I am unaware of any ability to do video over ISDN with Lync. You can do video over IP, but only if the Sony unit supports the IP and a common video codec, even with this setup, the only common codec is likely to be CIF which isn't great resolution.

Again there are gateways to bridge the two worlds for video (see Radvision, Cisco, Polycom) but they are typically quite expensive. If you want HD you are looking for something that supports/transcodes RTVideo.

    Hope this helps
