  • Try verifying under event viewer, by right clicking my computer and choose manage, under system tools, expand event viewer, follow by expand windows logs and choose system, in the action pane, click filter current log. In the filter current log dialog box, select critical and error check boxes and click ok. Once you perform these step, event viewer appears with only cirtical events and errors

  • Also, the minidump files showed you are experiencing an UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (BugCheck 7F) stop error referencing the NETIO.SYS.

Since you have ZoneAlarm installed in Windows 7 64-bit, the problem could be related to ZoneAlarm, such as in the following thread:

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/e94de527-183f-4227-9749-072ba0e7769f

You could try disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP or uninstall ZoneAlarm and see if the BSODs resolve.

As an alternative to disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP or uninstalling ZoneAlarm you could try the following hotfix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981180/en-us

There is a link at the top of the article to request the hotfix.

  • Yes all there on event viewer; lists all the crashes as to do with kernel power.

  • Ahh... Makes sense that it would be Zonealarm; it's one of the first things I installed, did not know about the compatibility issues. Have uninstalled Zonealarm and installed Comodo in its place. Everything seems ok at the moment but we'll wait and see. My laptop has had periods of quiescence lasting about 2 weeks before.

Thank you so much, I have a good feeling about this fix.

  •  installed Comodo in its place.

Remove it too and use the Windows 7 firewall. It's fine and you don't need such 3rd party tools.
