Stopping www publishing service in application server RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a farm with 1 WFE and 1 app server hosting central admin and 1 DB cluster. If we stop www publishing service in the app server, will it prevent the WFE from serving our sites? Does the www publishing service need to run on the app server?

  • The IIS World Wide Web Publishing Service (w3svc) is required on all SharePoint servers in the farm (dedicated database servers do not need this service running).

Servers in a SharePoint 2007 farm use web services to communicate with each other using HTTP on port 56737 and HTTPS on port 56738 (this is configured automatically in IIS under the Office Server Web Services website). This is how your WFE communicates with your App server.

    Do not stop this service.
