Planning a server move to a new location. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone have a checklist to go by when moving a network to a new location. I have a plan, but would like to see other input so nothing will be overlooked. Thanks.

  • Hello,

i would change them, then shutdown all machines. For startup wait until all DC/DNS machines are up and running and that the zone informations are updated correct. Also run dcdiag /v, netdaig and repadmin /showrepl to chekc for errors and solve them BEFORE moving and AFTER startup.

If they are error free go on with the other servers. Keep in mind they all need the CORRECT new DNS address on the NIC so they register correct. Check them all in the DNS zones after booting and do one server after the other until it runs complete error free.

  • Hello,

this forum is related to IT management not administration.

In short, change the ip address for the new location and shutdown the machine, move it, start it up and check DNS zones for the new entry.

If the machine is a Domain Controller you have to reconfigure also AD sites and services for the new site/subnet and/or move the DC to new/exisitng one.

For DCs also you have to keep in mind that the shutdown time should not go over the tombstone lifetime, between 60 to 180 days, depending on the OS version in use.

For additional questions please use the appropriate forum, depending on your OS version and server roles, which you didn't mention here.

  • Thanks Meinof. We basically have the following:

    1. Exchange Server- Windows 2003 Server 64bit w/Exchange 2007
    2. Domain Controller 1- Windows 2003 Server 32 bit
    3. Domain Controller 3/Web Server- Windows 2003 Server 32 bit
    4. File Server- Windows 2003 32 bit
    5. WAN Storage Server

The Data Center we are moving to is only about 15 minutes away. Basically what I need is an in depth checklist to go by including prerequisites. For example should I change the IP addresses, DNS settings, etc, prior to moving them? Thanks.
