DPM 2010: Block Saved State Backup? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

Is there a way to prevent DPM from using Saved State backup when backing up Hyper-V VMs? (2008 R2 with CSV) Optimally this would be set at the Protection Group level, but other locations may be workable. Even better would be to still allow the saved state backup if the virtual machine is turned off, but that is not a deal breaker for us.

The reason that we want this is that we have a number of applications that fail while the saved state is being created. We would prefer the backup to fail and log an error so that admins can address the root cause of incorrect backup method being chosen.

Thank you for any insight that can provided.

    Regards,

    Joe M.

  • Hi,

    DISABLING SAVED STATE (offline) BACKUPS

There can be cases where the admin will want to avoid offline backups since offline backups will put the VMs in saved state for some time (usually less than a minute), and that means disruption of services. To do that, create the following registry key on the Hyper-V Host(s):

     Key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent
     Value: AllowOffline
     Type: DWORD
     Data: 0
