Project File Corrupted RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have many activity project that has been maintained over a some months period.  When I edit any field I get the message Microsoft Project has stopped working. Then it closes. The saved file size goes from 10MB to 60MB. It's always different by large amounts.  I'm using Version 2013 with Windows 8.

    Any Ideas?

  • Automatically repair Microsoft Project
You can automatically repair Microsoft Project using Microsoft Project 2000
    or later versions only.

Caution When you use Detect and Repair in Microsoft Project, the program
automatically finds and fixes errors in all Microsoft Office files. By
default, some personalized settings are restored, such as a user name or
recently used file settings. However, you may want to discard these
personalized settings if you suspect they have been corrupted.

When repairing errors in Office files, the following default settings may be
    reset:

    The Office Assistant character selection
The size of the program window
Menu and toolbar positions and customization
    Security levels
    View settings
Also, most recently used entries on the File menu are removed. And you need
to reenter your user name and initials when you restart Microsoft Project.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 On the Help menu, click Detect and Repair.
To restore program shortcuts to the Windows Start menu, make sure to select
the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box.

    2 Click Start.

    Notes

This procedure detects and repairs problems associated with the installation
of Microsoft Project, such as registry settings and missing installation
files. It does not repair personal files, such as project files or templates.
If this procedure does not fix the problem, you may need to reinstall
    Microsoft Project.

  • Hi,

60MB is indeed a huge project size. A few questions:

    • How many rows do you have in your project plan?
    • Do you have any fomatting in it?
    • Are you connect to Project Server?
    • Do you use a shared resource pool?

I can then suggest various methods:

    • First of all, check for corruption's possible causes such as duplicated resources, blank rows, resources on summary tasks,
    • Then try the do a "save as" of your file to see if it helps,
    • Then export your file as an XML file, close Project, open it again and open your XML file. You'll be prompted with an import wizard. Save the file back to mpp format and see if it helps. Be aware that the XML export merhod will make you loose any formatting in your file.

Finally, you always have the opportunity to use a repair tool available on the market, such as this one or this one.

    Hope this helps,
