Windows Server 2012 R2 stops responding when a user with a large roaming profile logs onto a new PC RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an issue where the server hangs completely and needs a cold boot to restore operation when a user with a large roaming profile logs onto a PC they haven't used before. The issue seems to relate to the Offline file sync opening several thousand files on the server under that users login.  There are no events in the event log that would give a clue to the issue.

The server is a HP with a Xeon E3-1220 v3 3.1Ghz CPU 16GB of RAM and RAID 10. There are around a dozen users that get authenticated against this server and only two users were logged on to the domain when it last hung this morning.

The client PCs are all running Windows 7.

The server is running ESET File security 6

The network is largely running at 1 GB with a few Wireless clients. The hang occurs irrespective of the type of connection being made.

Any help or advice you can give would be gratefully received.
